I will state that Backderf does address the actions of him and his friends and describes their mockery as "inexcusable" in the "Notes" section, so it is not left totally unchallenged.

Objectively, this is a non-fiction novel that displays the behavior of a serial killer from the 70's, so I would not expect political correctness to be a present theme within the story. The "Dahmer Fan Club" also would join in. Backderf recounts the many times Dahmer mocked his mother's home decorator who had cerebral palsy as well as imitated his mother's physical fits due to her anxiety. I'm compelled to note that there is A TON of abelism in this novel. If you are a true crime aficionado, this graphic novel is absolutely a quick, worthwhile read. I found Backderf's contributions to the timeline of Jeffery Dahmer's adolescence and his actions which could act as predictors to Dahmer's future transgressions to be extremely valuable. The perspective of a past friend of a serial killer is not one we are often exposed to, let alone in more than a brief interview at the time of the killer's arrest. I've been interested in this story since I saw the movie trailer. I picked the graphic novel up as I had no idea when I would find the time to travel to see the movie, but I'm pleased I experienced the story in it's original form first.

The author obviously has a lot of talent and I think he realized that he had this very unique opportunity to make something truly amazing. A kid taking care of another kid doesn't really make sense. The author couldn't have possibly known what would happen in the near future - how could he? He probably should have said at least something to some one, but he didn't. As it was said in the preface, the adults (teachers and the parents) should have done something, but they didn't because looking the other way is easier. Sure, they were school friends, but everyone has their own problems, especially in high school, and you cannot expect that a teenager will somehow know that Dahmer had really bad problems. He also says in the preface that he did a lot of research for this because he wanted to make sure it was as truthful as possible (there are notes at the end of the book that explain where he got the info for each event).Īlso, I don't think it was the author's responsibility to take care of Dahmer. Dahmer died in 1994 so I think if he wanted fame, he wouldn't have waited that many years to publish it. The short version was published in 2002 and this version (the longer one) was published in 2012. D …more I don't think he was using Dahmer to get publicity. Tina I don't think he was using Dahmer to get publicity. With profound insight, what emerges is a Jeffrey Dahmer that few ever really knew, and one readers will never forget.more In My Friend Dahmer, a haunting and original graphic novel, writer-artist Backderf creates a surprisingly sympathetic portrait of a disturbed young man struggling against the morbid urges emanating from the deep recesses of his psyche - a shy kid, a teenage alcoholic, and a goofball who never quite fit in with his classmates. To Derf Backderf, “Jeff” was a much more complex figure: a high school friend with whom he had shared classrooms, hallways, and car rides. To the public, Dahmer was a monster who committed unthinkable atrocities. In 1991, Jeffrey Dahmer - the most notorious serial killer since Jack the Ripper - seared himself into the American consciousness.
